O'Neil auditioned for her third series of Canadian Idol in the early months of 2005 while still at high school. Her performance on the show impressed jury, and she was promoted to an audition in the 100th place. O'Neil was given high marks from the jury. But she was a victim of massive losses during the Top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. Her score was within the bottom three as well as the in the bottom two. The judges were shocked by the results and advised the audience to choose contestants similar to Melissa O'Neil, who had most impressive singing talent. O'Neil's performances were such awe-inspiring that she didn't even make it to the bottom three once again. O'Neil and her fellow contestants Rex Goudie and Werner gave two stunning performances in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that the headlines would state that O'Neil was able to defeat Goudie and was the third Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and the youngest winner in Idol history. O'Neil got a phone call from Canadian prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her for winning Canadian Idol.
